If you are someone who likes to stay informed about the latest health and wellness news, then you are likely aware that the interest in cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is at an all-time high and is continually growing. People across the country who want to feel better, to naturally treat common conditions that they have been struggling with for some time, or simply to supplement their daily health and wellness routine with something that is natural and good for their bodies, are excited about CBD and all of the benefits that it offers.

Understandably, however, as CBD is still fairly new in the world of supplements, there are still many questions about its use, its benefits, and the way it interacts with the body. Certainly, if you are going to consume any type of supplement, it’s important to understand how that supplement works, the side effects it has, and the way it might interact with any other supplements or medications you may take. Fortunately, CBD for the most part, works naturally within the systems of the body and has very few side effects. There are, however, a few potential interactions with medication that it can be important to be aware of.

How CBD Functions within the Body

Mammals (people, and pets as well) have an endocannabinoid system. That system has a very important role in our bodies. It helps to regulate and maintain our internal balance, also referred to as homeostasis. A large part of this is in keeping many of our important bodily processes functioning properly. These processes include metabolism, temperature, production of important neurotransmitters that affect mood, sleep, and inflammation, and many other important functions as well. To do this, the endocannabinoid system has a number of cannabinoid receptors. Our bodies produce cannabinoids naturally, and we also ingest cannabinoids from outside sources, like CBD. Those cannabinoids send signals to the receptors of the system, and those signals are translated, helping to keep the various systems functioning properly. CBD is, essentially, a “booster” to the good, important work that our bodies are already doing.

As CBD works within our bodies, it produces a number of beneficial health effects. These include reducing the discomfort of daily aches and muscle soreness, encouraging a full, restful night’s sleep, reducing the side effects of common mood disorders, and generally encouraging overall feelings of calm and relaxation, among many others. In fact, scientists and researchers are continually discovering new beneficial effects of CBD. While all of the excitement about CBD is certainly understandable, it is, of course, important to be informed about how it may interact with other supplements and medications that you take.

Important Interactions

Certainly, the majority of research conducted to date indicates that CBD is safe for use and consumption and poses few risks to health. It is, however, important to note that, in some cases, CBD may have effects that could cause negative interactions with other medications you are taking. One of these risks is the inhibition of what is known as the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. The P450 enzyme system is responsible for making sure that potentially toxic compounds are metabolized properly. This system, in fact, contains more than 50 enzymes that help to process and then eliminate toxins. This system helps to process the various supplements and medications that we take each day.

To determine the correct dosages of medications, doctors actually make calculations using the average amount of time that it takes for medications to be processed by the cytochrome P450 system. If only one drug is being processed at a time and the system is functioning at a healthy level, these averages generally provide accurate dosing information. Certain substances, however, have the capability of affecting certain processing times within the system, which causes drugs to metabolize either faster or slower. Some research has shown that CBD may be one such substance.

As CBD may inhibit the ability of the cytochrome P450 system to metabolize certain drugs, it could lead to an overall increase in processing times. This may lead to having higher levels of a medication in your system at one time than you otherwise would, which can, in some cases, lead to unwanted side effects. As a result, if you take other medications, it is wise to consult with a doctor about CBD and how you may use it safely in conjunction with those other medications.

Timing Is Key

Some scientists and medical researchers believe that the timing of when you choose to take CBD and your other medications may also be important in how the medication and CBD interact together in your body. Ultimately, spacing out doses of medications, CBD included, does help reduce the work that the liver has to do at one time. Spacing the medication and supplements out gives the liver time to process one, recover, and then process the other. As a result, your risk of having a drug interaction might be lower if you take your medications and your CBD products at two different times of day.
